We attach Bishop's Arthur's report on the last days and the large gatherings which are the climax of World Youth Day.
Saturday 19th July
It is hard to fully describe the last two days. WYD finally moved to Ranwick Racecourse for the all night vigil initiated by the Pope and today's final Mass there. The young people started to make their way to this venue early Saturday morning. Many of them crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge which was closed for only the third time in its life. As they settled down in their designated places they sang and made great merriment until, in the evening, at 1930 the Holy Father came to join them with all the bishops. The first part of that service was to listen to them. They gave testimonies of their experiences and of their hopes - all from different backgrounds and different stages of life. The Pope spoke to us of the hope he had in them as the youthfulness of the church and of his desire for God's Holy Spirit to fill them with courage and a deep love for Christ and the Church. The Blessed Sacrament was brought to the altar for adoration and despite the already assembled 300,000 youngsters you could have
heard a pin drop throughout that half-hour of adoration.
