On November 6th 2010 thirty people from across the diocese came together at the Briery Retreat Centre to reflect on the question 'What is Spiritual Direction?'
The day included presentation and discussions on what Spiritual Direction is, the importance of prayer and experiences of receiving and offering Spiritual Direction. In answer to the question of the day, the group, through discussion developed the following definitions:
- Spiritual Direction is a process which enables people to focus on the presence of God in all aspects of their life, and how to respond to it.
- Spiritual companionship that affirms and confirms us in growing in self knowledge as we desire holiness through connection with the sources of Christian life.
- A companion in developing self awareness and personal reflection in the journey towards God.
- Spiritual Direction is to be open to being fully human with another and together searching to become closer to God through the Holy Spirit.
- A relationship with a trusted companion who helps us discover God's presence in our lives and the direction He wants to take.
The day was enjoyed in the relaxed atmosphere of the Briery retreat centre. An enjoyable lunch and refreshments provided opportunity to meet and talk with other participants.
