WELCOME to the Evangelisation pages
What is Evangelisation?

Evangelisation in the Catholic context is a broad term. It is not a one-off event, but a process*. The process of Evangelisation includes: bearing witness to faith through words and actions that transform culture and society; the proclaiming of the gospel with the call to conversion; initiation into the faith through ‘catechesis'; ongoing formation and maturing in faith expressing itself in missionary activity, directed to non-believers.

"[Evangelizing all people] is a task and mission which the vast and profound changes of present-day society make all the more urgent. Evangelizing is in fact the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity. She exists in order to evangelize"
Evangelii Nuntiandi 14

What is the New Evangelisation?

The New Evangelisation is ‘starting afresh with Christ'; a new revelation of Christ Jesus to those who are practicing Catholics. Through this renewal of faith, the people of God, with new enthusiasm, will reach out to others; particularly the lapsed and those on the fringes of the Christian community. Pope John Paul II encouraged the local Church (diocese) to translate the New Evangelisation into pastoral initiatives adapted to the circumstances of each community. Our own diocesan process for renewal, ‘Come & See' is a response to this call.

"Look to the future with commitment to a New Evangelization, one that is new in its ardour, new in its methods, and new in its means of expression."
(Pope John Paul II to Bishops of Latin America, Haiti, 1983).

*The word Evangelism has a similar meaning to Evangelisation but is not the same. Evangelism is often interpreted to mean the proclamation of the gospel with the call to conversion, whereas this is only one aspect of Evangelisation. The word Evangelism may be more familiar to our brothers and sisters of other Christian denominations.
