WELCOME to the Catechesis pages

What is Catechesis?

The Catholic Church understands that catechesis - meant here to embrace all kinds of formation in faith - is the work of the whole community of the faithful. To be involved in catechesis is to ‘echo' the person of Jesus Christ and his Gospel, to ‘hand on' the Catholic faith with authenticity and joy.

Some people have a special part to play - the Bishop, the clergy, people appointed as catechists and the Office for Evangelisation & Catechesis. But it belongs to the mission of the whole community. We all have a part to play in handing on the faith.

‘At the heart of catechesis we find, in essence, a Person, the Person of Jesus of Nazareth, the only Son from the Father...who suffered and died for us and who now, after rising, is living with us forever.' To catechise is to ‘reveal in the person of Christ the whole of God's eternal design reaching fulfilment in the Person. It is to seek to understand the meaning of Christ's actions and words and of the signs worked by him.' Catechesis aims at putting ‘ communion...with Jesus Christ: only he can lead us to the love of the Father in the Spirit and make us share in the life of the Holy Trinity.'
