December 7th, 2013 - Ordination Day
Archbishop Arthur Roche, Bishop Emeritus, returned to St. Anne's Cathedral on Saturday 7th December to preside at the Ordination to the Priesthood of Deacon John Carlisle. He was joined by fellow Bishop Emeritus, Bishop David Konstant, and a host of priests from our Diocese and further afield.
Aged 47, John was born in Glasgow and grew up within the tradition of the Church of Scotland. He attended Glasgow Academy and then went to St Andrews to read Theology (MTh).and Cambridge to study for for a PGCE. He also turned to the Church of England and embarked upon a teaching careeer teaching Religious Education in a secondary school near Oxford. Perceiving a call to Ministry he trained as an Anglican priest st St Stephens House in Oxford, and was ordained for the London diocese, serving at St Alphage, Burnt Oak. John then moved to become Team Vicar of a Church in Ribbleton, Preston, before moving to become the Vicar of St Lukes, New Rossington. After 14 years of Anglican Ministry, John felt his faith journey was leading him to join the Roman Catholic Church and was received into full communion by the then Bishop of Leeds, Arthur Roche. Next he worked for a year teaching at St. Marys Comprehensive School, Menston before spending three years studying for priesthood at the Venerable English College in Rome.
John was ordained a Deacon in the summer and has spent the last six months working in St Robert's Parish Harrogate where he now becomes the Assistant Priest and Chaplain at St John Fisher High School.
We wish him many happy years of fruitful priestly ministry.
