THE BISHOP OF LEEDS
30 May 2005
My Dear Friends,
Leeds Cathedral is one of the finest examples in this country of Edwardian Arts & Crafts Architecture. It was built at the turn of the last century and, in the main, was paid for by the poor Catholics of the Diocese. This fact alone is a great tribute to their faith and their pride in building a fine Cathedral for the whole Diocese.
The Cathedral is now in need of considerable interior restoration. The information in this Appeal leaflet explains the situation in detail. In order to restore our Cathedral and adapt the sanctuary for the worthy celebration of the liturgy, a total of £1.5m is needed.
The Cathedral has £320,000 to begin this work from the generous response to the 1995 Diocesan Appeal, but unless I can raise a further £1.2m the effect of spending what we already have received will be minimal. It is for this reason that I am appealing to you to help me achieve this restoration now before the costs escalate and become completely prohibitive.
I ask you to support this Appeal and become a Restoration Patron or contact the Cathedral for more information. Anything you can contribute to help restore our Cathedral to its former glory will be an added testimony to the faith and pride of previous generations of Catholics in this Diocese who have left us such an important legacy.
With every blessing and thanks for all you give to the Church.
Yours sincerely
The Right Reverend Arthur Roche
