Scholarships for Students at Leeds Cathedral
The Cathedral is well known as home to one of the finest and most comprehensive Catholic Choral Foundations in England. It offers scholarships to students studying at Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield Universities, and Leeds College of Music. Post graduate applications are also welcome.

University Choral Scholarships are offered for Sopranos, Altos, Tenors and Basses in the mixed voice adult choir. The normal commitment is two weekly early evening practices (Tuesday and Wednesday) and one Sunday service. Broadcasts, recordings and concert performances take place throughout the year. The scholarships have a degree of flexibility designed to suit the university term and are currently worth up to 1500 per annum.

The Organ Scholarship is suitable for students intending to follow a professional career in classical music. The Organ Scholar works alongside the Director of Music and Organist to provide organ accompaniments and to assist in choral training if desired. The organ scholarship is currently worth 2250 per annum.

A Choral Conducting Scholarship is offered annually for those interested in following a professional career involving work with both young and adult voices, either in Cathedral/Church/secular settings or within a school environment. As with the Organ Scholarship it affords ample opportunity to make the many professional contacts necessary to enter the profession. The choral conducting scholarship is currently worth 2250 per annum.

A Composition Scholarship is available usually in conjunction with B.Mus. B A, M.Mus. or M A students at Leeds or Huddersfield universities. Students should approach their Composition Professor about this opportunity.

Schools Choral Scholarships are available to pupils aged 15 to 18 and cover the cost of any singing lessons over the year.

Scholarships run from September to June, with auditions at the Cathedral. For prospective university students this can sometimes be arranged to coincide with open days. It is advisable to seek auditions early in the year if possible. Auditions for any remaining choral scholarships will be held on arrival for appropriately qualified candidates wishing to apply.

For further information and to arrange an audition, please contact Benjamin Saunders, Director of Music or Mrs. Claudine Tat (PA), on 0113 244 8634 or by email at [email protected]
